And how did Clarus come to be?  Here’s the story (as told by Dr. Lucia):

It’s June of 1995 and I’m on my honeymoon.  My neck is hurting so much that I look like I’ve got whiplash, yet there is no accident to explain the pain.  I schedule a massage with a “healer” recommended by the hotel staff.  I’m a few years out from earning my doctorate at Northwestern Graduate Medical School, and the word “healer” makes me feel …..uncomfortable.

As I sit on the massage table, explaining my neck pain, the practitioner moves to my feet and begins to study them in silence.  He tells me I have severe digestive issues and that I am intolerant of and not absorbing much of what I am eating.  My body is inflamed and that is causing the neck pain as well as the migraines I hadn’t yet mentioned to him.  How does he know this from my feet?   How did he know I had been living on Rolaids and Advil?  He told me to see an alternative physician when I returned home and go through a series of tests.  I did.  The holistic medical doctor agreed with the diagnosis and testing showed I had 32 foods to avoid.  I cried my first trip to Whole Foods (even before I got to the register)…….avoiding wheat and most grain, dairy, beans, etc, was overwhelming.  Not to mention that I was now the eating disorders therapist who couldn’t eat!

So my gut (literally in my case), led me on a journey into the world of alternative and complementary medicine, which led to the birthing of Clarus Center.  In 2006, Martin Lemon, Ph.D., my partner and husband, and I morphed our psychology group practice of 10 years into a full service wellness center.  Clarus Center: A Community Approach to Wellness was born.  Why the word “community”?  Each practitioner has his or her own business with its own business practices.  We come together under one beautiful roof, literally sitting in circle, sharing and challenging our ideas while supporting each other’s health, wellness and prosperity.  Our practices span the range of traditional and alternative practitioners……there is harmony rather than judgment regarding the variety of ways to facilitate healing of the body, mind and spirit.

We are here for you……a community of individual practitioners, who have the like minded vision of facilitating healing and promoting growth and expansion so that you can be as well and as vibrant as  possible.  As it takes a village to raise a child, it often takes the knowledge and skill of several practitioners to help us heal from the complex issues life may bring.

Be well,

Lucia LiCavoli, Ph.D.

Psychologist and Founder of Clarus Center
